Sheriff Jay Russell Offers Boating Safety Tips

Summer is here and with that, boating becomes one of the most popular activities in our area.

Whether it is fishing, water skiing, or maybe just going to your favorite beach area on a local river or lake, Sheriff Russell and Deputies of the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office offer the following tips to remind boaters to be aware of Louisiana boating regulations and practice safety while on the water.

BOAT SOBER

Never boat under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication. Alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents.

WEAR A LIFE JACKET

86% of people who drowned in recreational boating accidents were not wearing a life jacket. Always wear your life jacket!

TAKE A BOATING SAFETY COURSE

In accidents where the operator’s level of instruction was known, 70% of fatalities occurred on boats where the boat operator had not received any boating safety instruction.
