Remember to Celebrate President's Day on February 15, 2010
This year we will celebrate Presidents Day on Monday, February 15. This particular holiday honors the accomplishments of our first President, George Washington, also known as the Father of this Country. On this day we honor his leadership in the founding of our nation. Presidents Day was the first holiday to honor an American citizen. Originally, this holiday used to be celebrated on February 22, Washington’s actual birthday but was changed to the 3rd Monday of February to also honor President Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday was February 12 with Presidents Day falling between these two birthdays.

Presidents Day is also a tribute to Washington, who as a General in the Revolutionary War created the first military badge of merit for the common soldier. This award was revived on Washington’s 200th birthday in 1932. The Purple Heart recognizes injuries received in combat. Presidents Day, like Memorial Day and Veterans Day is a weekend in which we have the opportunity to honor our veterans.

The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office is proud of our country’s heritage and of the countless sacrifices made during the fledging formation of our country. These men and women, throughout our country’s history had a vision which culminated in the creation of the Constitution of the United States of America. This document became the basis for who and where we are today.

On this day, the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office thankfully acknowledges not only the leadership of our Presidents but also everyone who is currently serving or has served in our military. These veterans belonging to all branches of our armed forces carry on the tradition of our first continental army, defending our individual rights and freedoms. Everyone here at the Sheriff’s Office say, a very big thank you to every veteran for being our defender, for being our shield, for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each and every hour of the day. May we always remember and be mindful of the tremendous sacrifices made in this generation and in generations past to ensure that we as a nation remain strong and safe.
